Tips for Winterizing a Diesel Marine Engine

Having a boat is one of summer’s finer joys. There is nothing like going out on a boat on a fine spring morning and just spending the day in the quietness of the water. Of course, you also have to know how to winterize your Depco Power marine diesel engine before the first icy fingers of winter descend on your area.

Below you will find some tips for how to winterize your Depco marine engines before the winter sets in.

Fuel the Vessel

The first things you will want to do are fuel the vessel to capacity and then add some biocide to the tank of the engine. Next, you will want to change the oil and then replace the oil filter. Next, change the filter element and the air filter as well.

Remove the Domes

You should next remove the clear plastic domes, and then remove everything underneath the dome. Once everything from the gaskets to the filters is removed, you can replace the dome as well. Never fuel the dome. Once you do this, you will want to unscrew the primary filter, so that you can replace the element. After you replace the filter, you can then replace the cap.

Disconnect the Pumps Outlet Hose

Once you have disconnected the pumps outlet hose, you should then run fresh cold water through it to pump it out. Once that is done, you should reconnect the hose.

Off Shore or On Shore

Decide if the boat is going to be stored off shore or on shore, then tighten then tighten the bolts that hold the stuffing box together. Make sure to tie a red tag to the propeller staff, just where it enters the stuffing box and you are good to go. Make sure that you have winterized your marine engine the right way and it will be ready for you to take out on the water when the sun heats the earth again.

These are just a few tips for winterizing your marine engine when the weather gets cold. From disconnecting the hoses to removing the domes, you should be good to go in no time at all.
